Angry White Men: Masculinity on the Extreme Right

The rise of the extreme right has been dramatic and alarming. Michael Kimmel has interviewed active and former neo-Nazis, skinheads, and radical extremists in both Europe and the U.S., and has come to understand the importance of gender in their worldview. He will discuss gender as a tool for recruitment but also a hopeful foundation for helping extremists out of the movement.

Michael Kimmel is one of the world’s leading experts on men and masculinities. He is the SUNY Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Stony Brook University. He has delivered the annual lecture marking International Women’s Day at the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of Europe. He has worked with Ministers for Gender Equality in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden to develop programs for boys and men. Among his books are “Angry White Men” and the best-seller “Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men.”
