Although the American musical is often thought of as escapist entertainment, it has dealt with serious social issues. In fact, at key moments in history, the musical has been in the forefront of the national conversation about race, politics, and sexuality.
Douglas Anderson, artistic director of the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury, VT, will explore the musical’s unique ability to showcase singing and dancing while holding a mirror up to ourselves. Among musicals that were not afraid to challenge audiences, he includes Showboat, Cabaret, and Hamilton. Even the seemingly innocent Oklahoma! has surprisingly strong things to say about how America should conduct itself during wartime.
Anderson, an actor, playwright and teacher, has taught at Middlebury College, Amherst College, and the University of Illinois. He wrote for “The Guiding Light” on television and for the Children’s Television Workshop. He and his wife Debby live in Middlebury, VT.
