Louis P. Masur, professor of American Studies and history at Rutgers University, will discuss the qualities of Abraham Lincoln’s leadership style that have brought him to be ranked, typically ,as the United States’ foremost president. What extraordinary skills did Lincoln use to win the Civil War and preserve the nation? Humor and storytelling, among others. Perhaps most important of all, Lincoln was not afraid to change his mind. Masur will show that by studying Lincoln, we come away with deeper appreciation of what it means to be a leader.
Masur is the Board of Governors Distinguished Professor of American Studies and History at Rutgers University. He is the author of several books, including “Lincoln’s Last Speech: Wartime Reconstruction and the Crisis of Reunion” (Oxford University Press 2015) and, most recently, “A Journey North: Jefferson, Madison and the Forging of a Friendship” (Oxford University Press 2025).
